Execs from UN Women, The World Bank, Samsung, IBM, and Women’s Refugee Commission to Discuss Role of Women at Critical Crossroads of Tech-Humanitarian Efforts Worldwide

New York, September 28, 2016 – On November 10, at 6 p.m. EST, OVERTURE will host the next gathering for its Digital Humanitarian™ Series: Gender Inclusion to Accelerate Innovation.” CNBC Anchor Bertha Coombs will host the panel-discussion event – at Civic Hall (a well-known collaboration center for the world's civic innovators) in New York City’s Flatiron District. Jamie Pallot, Co-founder of the Emblematic Group, will moderate the panel.

The evening will have two featured presenters: Jeni Klugman (Managing Director, Georgetown Institute for Women; and Former Director of Gender and Development at World Bank) and Dale Buscher, the Senior Director for Programs at the Women's Refugee Commission. Discussion panelists will include: Fiona Bayat-Renoux (Senior Advisor to the Deputy Executive Director, UN Women); Jeanne Jang (Director, IBM Digital Innovation Lab); and Sayo Martin (Head of Marketing, Global Innovation Center, Samsung Electronics).

Donnovan Andrews – NY media executive and OVERTURE founder – explains the urgent need for events such as Gender Inclusion to Accelerate Innovation: "Female scientists are leading cutting-edge discoveries in their fields, from missions to Mars, to research projects that include growing human bones and harvesting electricity from plants. This previously neglected workforce is becoming more empowered and enabled. Through panel discussions and our annual Forum, OVERTURE hopes to bring together global influencers who can work with us to accelerate women’s advancement within the scientific community and beyond."

When asked why she felt compelled to be on the panel of this Digital Humanitarian™ Series event, Sayo Martin replied: “I’m here today because gender-inclusion is an important aspect for the future of innovation and humanitarianism. I truly believe there are many ways we can take advantage of technologies to: spread the word about equal rights, change attitudes, promote a sense of global fairness, and to provide access to improved living conditions and economic opportunities for all. Collectively, as an industry of innovators and game changers, we can bring prosperity and safety to women – which, in turn, will improve the lives of children and strengthen families.”

Pre-event, online discussions are already active – via Twitter hashtags #genderinclusion#WomensEconomicEmpowerment#wecandomore, and #digitalhumanitarian. And, groups including the United Nations Secretary-General's High-Level Panel on #WomensEconomicEmpowerment(@UNHLP) are Tweeting about OVERTURE’s November 10 Gender Inclusion to Accelerate Innovation event.

OVERTURE organizes the Digital Humanitarian™ Series, and other events in NY and London, to foster coalitions and action: by bringing the right decision-makers together to enable idea generation, tech development, funding and distribution of apps, devices and other technologies that will truly help alleviate the plight of refugees and others living in extreme poverty.
